'Initiative would lessen risk of tired driving'

ACC urges governments to turn old sites into rest areas

THE Australian Caravan Club has called on federal and state governments to provide more rest areas for travellers.

In a letter to transport ministers, the club – which has a growing membership of caravan and camper trailer owners – has proposed that unused sites previously used as storage areas for road building materials and the like could be turned into cost effective rest areas.

Chairman Lionel Mussell said there were areas on many highways that could be used and at very little cost.

"We are not looking for lavish areas with tables and toilets etc ... although these facilities are appreciated by motorists. Rather, we believe that many currently unused areas could provide places where people could pull over for much needed rests after driving for several hours," he said.

Mr Mussell pointed out that the Australian Caravan Club was concerned with road safety and believed the initiative could reduce fatigue and lessen the risk of motorists continuing to drive when tired.

Adding more rest areas would be a positive contribution by reducing one factor that could lead to road accidents.

"Towing recreational units like caravans and boats adds to the concentration level needed by drivers," he explained. "We have members in every Australian state and want them to enjoy their lifestyle with the least possible stress. More rest areas would help achieve this."
