Beachfront land goes to auction

Tourists may again stay at site of former Agnes park

TOURISTS may again be able to stay at the site of the old Agnes Water Caravan Park in Queensland ... five years after the land was sold to developers.

There was uproar after the land on which the popular park stood was cleared for redevelopment but then remained dormant. Although the former Miriam Vale Shire Council approved plans for a $300 million resort, not a brick was laid and the site still remains just a patch of dirt.

Angry locals and businesses claim the disused land is now an eyesore and that closing the former park had cost the local community millions in lost revenue.

About 50,000 people holidayed at the beachfront caravan park annually, injecting up to $5 million into the local economy.

But relief may be in sight.

The area has just been listed by real estate agents CB Richard Ellis and will be up for auction at the Agnes Tavern on August 20.

Planning approval for a caravan park on the six-acre site - along with cabins, an 18-unit motel and recreational facilities - still remains valid.

Local resident and former Miriam Vale Shire councillor Josie Meng told local media the closure of the old Agnes Water Caravan Park had left a large hole in the area's economy.

"But if this project goes ahead, it will fill a great gap that its closure left," she reportedly said.
