Up to 700 rigs expected to flood into Rockhampton Showground

PLANS are already well underway for the largest ever gathering of caravans in Queensland.

Organisers of the 15th National Caravan Rally expect up to 700 caravans from all over Australia and New Zealand will converge on Rockhampton – known as the Beef Capital of Australia – for the 10-day event, scheduled to begin on September 23, 2013.

The organising committee said there would be fun and fellowship as members renewed acquaintances made at previous national rallies and enjoyed all the entertainment on offer.

Rockhampton Showground has been chosen as the venue because of its infrastructure and ability to service such a large contingent of caravans.

The venue is also ideally situated within easy reach of shops, restaurants, hospitals, entertainment venues and beaches.

Tours to local attractions will be organised and many low-cost and free activities will also be on offer in the area, including Rockhampton's internationally recognised Botanic and Japanese Gardens, the Rockhampton Art Gallery, the Rockhampton Zoo and Murray Lagoon Wetlands, Fitzroy River parkland and nature walk.

Visitors can take a drive up to Mt Archer to take in the spectacular views or explore the local caves.

A spokesperson said the rally site would be busy with caravanners joining in a variety of day and evening activities, including craft sessions, technology classes, sporting events, book club, bingo, informative seminars on a variety of topics, trade exhibitor stands and market stalls.

Organisers are also planning some big surprises for evening entertainment.

Children have not been forgotten in the planning process.

"Professional care is being arranged for them and a wide range of activities planned based on recommendations from the children themselves as to what they would like to see happen at the rally," the spokesperson added.

National Caravan Club rallies are held every three years around Australia, with states taking it in turn to host the event.

Attendance is open to members of bona fide and incorporated caravan clubs only.

The 2013 rally is being supported by Queensland Government, Tourism Queensland, Jayco, Aspen Parks, Capricorn Enterprise and the Rockhampton Regional Council.

Rally organisers said they would accept further sponsorships.
