WA motoring club RAC has warned caravanners to take extra care on the roads as more and more take to the roads as COVID during the easing of restrictions. "Many are likely to be travelling on unfamiliar roads, for longer distances and towing a caravan for the first time," it said today.

SA Police reports traffic build up after caravan lost its tyre on northbound lanes of South Road at Edwardstown.

JUNE 24:
Victoria's Central Goldfields Shire Council and Talbot Football Netball Club are working closely to safeguard the future of Talbot Caravan Park. Ongoing issues relating to electrical safety, water supply, fire prevention and emergency management had put the park’s future in jeopardy. A major revenue raiser for the club, the park attracts casual visitors and is home to 11 permanent residents who pay $60 weekly in rent. Locals want the park to remain open in the belief it could draw short-term visitors looking for free and low cost, no frills camping and caravanning. Remedial work is still ongoing and must be completed by late July.

JUNE 24:
UPDATE: The committee has rescinded its decision, saying: "
We have now updated our decision based on advice from the Chief Health Officer and will welcome all guests, including our Twelve Month Permit holders back into our parks."  Three caravan parks managed by Victoria's Great Ocean Road Coast Committee have been closed to guests from identified COVID-19 hotspots in Melbourne. They are the Lorne Foreshore, Torquay Foreshore and Anglesea Family parks. All bookings from the council areas of Hume, Casey, Brimbank, Moreland, Cardinia and Darebin have been cancelled to "protect the health and safety of our staff, visitors and coastal communities," the committee said. "We will not be lifting these restrictions until the Victorian Government advises that community transmission in these areas is under control." Meanwhile, information would be updated "as required" to add or subtract an area identified by the latest government information, it added.

NSW drivers who tow caravans and boats on Sydney's toll roads will now be eligible for a dedicated rebate after an outcry protesting they were being slugged the same rates as huge trucks. But there is criticism because travellers will still initially be charged the higher toll ... but can apply for the rebate to bring the cost in line with regular cars. The rebate is capped at eight toll trips a month.

The gong recognises caravan park operators who have made significant changes to their business to effectively "turn it around". Victoria Tourism Industry Council chief executive Felicia Mariani has welcomed the easing of COVID restrictions in the state from June 22. "In particular, we're thrilled to see that the shared facilities in our caravan and camping sites across the state can reopen," she said. "This is great news as we know these campsites have struggled with limited, or no ability, to welcome visitors back. This has caused incredible stress with operators having been in hibernation for the past three months."

Shellharbour City councillors in SA have voted unanimously in favour of engaging an external consultant to "progress planning proposals" for seasonal camping areas at Ron Costello Oval, Beverley Whitfield Park and Albion Park Showground. A report said the local community could benefit from visitors using the sites through increased economic activity. But it added: "This benefit needs to be balanced against possible disruption and loss of access to existing amenities for our residents."

Thieves struck with a vengeance at Edithburgh Caravan Park on SA’s Yorke Peninsula over the long weekend. Stolen from five different guests were three mountain bikes, two small blue Coleman eskies, a black Weber Q BBQ and three fishing rods. Police said all items were an easy target and it was "a timely reminder" for people beginning to get back into their travel plans to ensure that camping and personal items were stored securely overnight.

An award-winning 1700-acre caravan park on the banks of the Darling River near Wilcannia in NSW is looking for a couple with their own management structure who want to profit share. Warrawong on the Darling offers 40 powered and virtually unlimited non-powered sites. "This contract is for three years and will suit an owner-mentality and not employee with the ability to grow and improve an already great product," its advertising materials says.
