More people turning to touring holidays

Bumper winter season predicted as travellers enjoy cheaper fuel

QUEENSLAND'S caravan and camping industry is predicting a bumper winter season as early indicators point to more travellers getting behind the wheel.

Caravanning Queensland chief executive officer Ron Chapman said despite the economic gloom, touring holidays remained the most affordable and flexible holiday option, particularly as petrol prices were up to 50 cents cheaper than a year ago.

"Research shows that Aussies travelling today are saving up to $10 a day on fuel, compared to the same time last year," he said. "That's a substantial saving and reinforces touring holidays as the most affordable holiday option."

Mr Chapman said the season had already started "really strongly" with many caravan, camping and tourist parks packed during Easter and the May Day Long Weekend.

"The arrival of cold weather down south has also spurred many travellers to head to Queensland for a holiday in the sun," he continued.

"Accommodation, entertainment and food costs can be significantly lower on a touring holiday than many other types of holiday. That's why we're seeing couples, retirees and families returning to touring holidays as they look to tighten their budgets, but still enjoy a break."

Despite the economic downturn, sales of caravans, motorhomes, tent trailers and camping equipment remained strong, he claimed.

There are more than 350,000 caravans, motorhomes and camper trailers registered in Australia.
