Good Samaritans come to Carol's aid after inferno
Manx cats perish as fire
rips through pensioner's caravan
FOUR purebred cats perished when fire ripped through a disabled
pensioner's home at a Queensland caravan park.
Carol Halliwell's caravan at the Nambour Caravan Park, Kulangoor, was
already a blazing inferno when fire crews arrived.
Staff member Tony Turner tried to save the caravan with a garden hose but
was beaten back by the intense heat.
Park owner Kim Little told Caravanning News: "There was nothing
anyone could do, the fire was so fierce."
Caravanners consoled Ms Halliwell, 43, when she returned to her burnt out
caravan and was told her beloved Manx cats had died.
She told media: "My poor babies had no way of getting out. I’ve had them
for 15 years – since they were babies. Those cats were my life."
Ms Little said the midday fire had left the pet owner with nothing but the
clothes on her back.
"We popped her into a little cabin and gave her some furniture," she said.
"Then we all got together and did some fundraising for her, so she now
everything she needs."
And she added: "We did not know she had cats ... she had them locked
inside the caravan. She said she'll never have cats again because she was
so devastated at losing her pets."
A Department of Community Safety spokesperson said three fire crews
attended the fire.
"The caravan was well alight on arrival and was destroyed," the
spokesperson explained. "A second caravan also suffered damage.
"No one was injured and the cause of the fire is being investigated."
