POLICE in South Australia are pleading with caravanners to be more
security conscious.
Their appeal came after thieves made off with two caravans ... one from
Dublin and one from Evanston Park.
"Caravans are popular targets for thieves who steal the contents, fixtures
and fittings as well as the actual caravan," a spokesperson said.
"Many people regard their caravan as a second home, so if you haven't
already considered the security of your valuable asset now is the time to
protect your home on wheels."
Basic tips for thwarting thieves include locking up the caravan, including windows and skylights, and keeping it locked when not in use.
Owners should never leave

Owners should never leave valuables inside the caravan, especially in
sight or near windows.
Curtains should be kept drawn.
The spokesman suggested owners should consider installing exterior sensor lighting on their
RVs which activated when someone approached.
Wheel clamps or chain locks presented a "highly visible deterrent" and
should be used to immobilise caravans.
Owners could install an alarm system ‒ some include GPS tracking ‒ and
display warning stickers that the caravan is alarmed.
Take care when parking, preferably leaving vehicles out of sight on your property or
in a garage if possible.
Caravan left on a driveway should ideally have another vehicle between
it and the roadway to prevent access.
VIN numbers should be recorded safely and then etched on a concealed part
of a caravan where a thief would not think to look.
Finally, police said owners should keep an up-to-date photograph of their
caravan to help with identification if necessary.
