Be aware of fire safety

Firies warn grey nomads to check their caravans

QUEENSLAND Fire and Rescue Service is warning grey nomad travellers to check their caravans carefully before heading north this winter.

The service says caravans and mobile homes have many potential fire ignition points, from cooking elements to external gas bottles.

QFRS Cairns acting Superintendent Darren Walsh says all caravans should be fitted with smoke alarms.

"The big thing there, particularly with those gas bottles that they carry on their vehicles, is to ensure they are checked when they should be checked and ensure all the fittings and everything is serviced and maintained," he said.

Mr Walsh said lighting fires near caravans and gas bottles is a hazard.

"It comes back to just like living in your own house. The different things that you would do there in regards to electrical safety, not overloading the power points. Being aware of fire safety all round. Don't have any fires just outside your caravan," he added.
