No quick solution, says mayor
Report suggests moving
flood-prone tourist park

LISMORE's
flood-prone caravan park should be closed and moved to a dryer location,
it has been suggested.
A lengthy report into the recovery efforts following the $41 million flood
disaster across New South Wales' North Coast earlier this year recommends
the Lismore Tourist Park near the city centre be relocated.
Fifty-five caravans and nine cabins were badly damaged when floodwaters
raged through the leafy and well-maintained park park in May.
"An incident with similar characteristics is highly likely to be repeated
unless decisive action is taken," the report warns.
It said the two-and-a-half star park in Dawson Street posed an "ongoing unacceptably high
safety risk to long-term residents".
Other suggestions in the report included building a levee round the
75-site park.
But Lismore Mayor and Flood Recovery Committee chairwoman Jenny Dowell
said this would only divert floodwaters to another part of city.
She believed there was no quick solution to the problem, explaining that
it would be difficult to find another location for the park with
comparable access to the city centre and Lismore Base Hospital.
