ALEX Fulcher, the 79-year-old driving force behind the successful Fulcher's Caravans dealership in South Camden, NSW, is retiring after nearly 50 years in the caravan industry.

"I haven't got a definite date, but the business will close sometime this month," Alex told Caravanning News.

"It's a shame and it will be a sad moment when I finally pull down the shutters because I have made lots of friends in the industry and among our clients over the years."

Alex has been running the business virtually single handedly since son Alan died last year.

He said he would not be putting his feet up but would still be busy as board member of Bankstown Sports Club, president of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association's NSW division and with his continuing significant involvement in the cycling world.

In fact, for his outstanding service to cycling, he has been awarded an Order of Merit by Cycling Australia, an Order of Merit by Cycling New South Wales and a Volunteer Award from world body UCI.

And for his outstanding service to sport in general, Alex was awarded a Member of British Empire (MBE) honour in 1982 and also received the Order of Australia Medal in last year's Queen's Birthday Honours.

Alex entered the caravan industry in 1972, with Alan joining him in 1977.

As the family dealership developed, it traded in such names as Viscount, Jayco, Windsor and Coromal.

By 1995, Fulcher's Caravans started selling caravans manufactured to their own specifications, all carrying the 'Fulcher' brand.
