'Closure' for owners

Failed appeal casts doubts on further major imports of Geist

THE future of Geist caravan imports into Australia has been thrown further into doubt, it has been revealed.

This follows news that LMC, who build the caravans at its Germany factory, has failed in its appeal to secure funds from the sale of liquidated stock after the demise of the leading Australian importer.

About 70 caravans were auctioned in Brisbane and Sydney by secured creditor GE Commercial Corporation, which was understood to be owed around $4 million.

Sales of Geist caravans and motorhomes in Australia were thrown into chaos after the Maryborough-based importer, Oakhurst International Caravans, went belly-up in March, 2009, with reported debts of up to $11 million.

According to an insider, LMC has time to lodge a further appeal but is unlikely to do so.

Former Geist national development manager in Australia Peter Treasure, who runs the www.geistowners.com website, said the latest decision by the courts cast doubt on future imports but now gave "closure to a difficult time for Geist owners".

A few Geists are still being imported into Western Australia from Britain and more than $80,000 worth of parts are on their way to repair hail-damaged Geists in WA.

Meanwhile, some businesses are linking into suppliers and the German factory to import spares direct.

"Now the parts are flowing in, any Geist owner should feel confident they are able to source parts when they need them," Mr Treasure said.

"Our members can now focus on enjoying their Geist rather than defending its longevity. The fact that the build technology and fit-out still outstrips many Aussie-built 'vans will give owners confidence that the need to update is a long way off," he added.

More than 30 Geist caravans are expected to gather for a four-day rally at Maleny, Queensland, on August 27.

"We have 'vans from most states arriving, including WA, to meet other Geist owners," Mr Treasure explained. "I am really happy with the support of our members. They just want to be kept informed of the issues and meet other Geist owners."

He said it was hoped to create a new record for the most privately-owned Geist caravans gathered in one location in the southern hemispere.

"Any Geist owners wanting to be involved can join up at www.geistowners.com and then attend for just $30 for the four-day weekend," Mr Treasure added.
