Kate Washington: caravan rego costs

THE long-running saga over "exorbitant" caravan registration fees in New South Wales continues.

Disgruntled caravan owners took their grouse to the state Government some years ago, but it appears very little has been done to remedy the situation.

One Newcastle caravan owner told Caravanning News: "It's highway robbery considering we only use our caravan for about four weeks a year ... and then mainly on roads outside NSW."

And another fumed: "We thought things were looking up when the Government scrapped sales tax on caravan and trailer sales, but it seems that in some respects caravanners still have to dig deeper into their pockets than their counterparts in other states."

Members of the Tamworth and District Caravan and Leisure Club presented the Government with a 10,000-signature petition demanding that the fee be brought in line with neighbouring states.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington is furious that caravanners are still faced with huge registration fees.

"Caravan owners across the Hunter shouldn't be forced to pay more than double what their neighbours in Queensland pay and eight times what their Victorian neighbours are charged," she told the media.

Caravan owners were forced to cough up $449 in NSW to register RVs weighing more than two and a half tonnes.

Their counterparts in Victoria were charged less than $50 for the same type of caravan.

When the question of the high registration fees was raised in State Parliament some years ago, MPs were told the hefty 'weight tax' component reflected the damage that vehicles cause to the road network.

Ms Washington accused NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay of failing to honour a 2014 Government promise to reduce the cost of registering a caravan.

The health lawyer and mother of three said the Hunter was well serviced for RVers, with caravan parks in Port Stephens and throughout the area.

“Caravan holidays are an affordable way for hundreds of families across the Hunter to take a break and relax with loved ones," she said.
