'Timely and measured response'
NSW turns
spotlight on RV safety to cater for boom in regional road trips
Have your say
FREE educational safety checks have given
caravan and camper trailer owners the knowledge
and confidence to hit the road as safely as possible, according to NSW
Regional Transport and Roads Minister Paul Toole.
The events were held this month at Kempsey, Coffs Harbour and Grafton in
response to a rise in regional travel.
"With international travel restrictions still in place, and domestic
restrictions only just lifting, we've seen a surge in the number of people
wanting to explore all the wonderful things regional NSW has to offer in a
caravan or camper trailer," Mr Toole said.
"It's important that these homes away from home are compliant and can be
used right across our state road network safely.
"Transport for NSW rolled out these free workshops in a state-wide first
and I'm glad so many people attended to ensure their own safety and the
safety of other road users."
Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey was pleased that so many locals supported
the events.
"With a limit of 13 caravans or trailers per event, they were booked out
almost as soon as we made them available," she said.
"It's important to make drivers towing a 'van or camper
trailer aware of simple things, which can take them from being
within the limits to become overweight."
Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said the sessions offered local
owners handy tips when it came to hitting the road with a caravan or
trailer in tow.
"Things like adding a tool box to the back,
attaching an awning, popping a kayak on the roof or travelling with extra
water tanks can all make a difference to vehicle safety,"
Mr Singh said.
"These events provided vital information to help improve drivers'
understanding of why it's important to get weights, mass and dimensions
right for the safety of themselves and other road users."
Member for Clarence Chris Gulaptis said it was a timely reminder for
caravan and camper trailer owners to take stock
ahead of hitting the road for the summer
holidays.
"Transport for NSW had safety experts on hand to provide immediate advice
on how to correct any safety concerns before driving off," he said.
"Owners were also offered checks to ensure their vehicles complied with
all registration requirements and that the tow
ball, vehicle and caravan weight was distributed safely."
Caravan safety guidelines, a new caravan safety brochure and pre-departure
checklist are now available to help drivers understand how to safely tow a
caravan and stay safe this holiday season.
