Avalanche of submissions force backflip
Protestors win fight after
moves PLANS to reduce camping sites in a Victorian coastal area made famous by the popular SeaChange television series have been scrapped. The Barwon Coast Committee of Management changed its mind after being swamped with submissions following the release of 10-year master plans for the Barwon Heads and Riverview caravan parks, which stand on Crown land about 100km south-west of Melbourne. Tourists flocked to the area after the ABC's award-winning SeaChange series hit Australia's television screens in 1998. Caravanners from all over Australia wanted to experience first hand the beautiful locations featured in the 39-episode series, including the bridge, estuary shore, fishermen's jetty and even the Beach House which was Laura's home and can now be rented by fans. But there were concerns over alleged profiteering from the sales of caravans after the television series and the committee proposed increasing open space within the camping area and banning the sale of on-site weekenders from July, 2013. Committee general manager Bob Jordan said more than 120 submissions had been received on the draft 10-year master plans, with campers complaining about the resulting loss of over 30 sites. He said campers had responded strongly to a proposal to increase open space within the camping area which would result in the loss of sites. The committee had also decided not to remove a small number of sites on the ridge at Barwon Heads Caravan Park but may proceed with plans to install eight cabins. Mr Jordan reportedly said the committee would delay its decision on limiting site occupancy to 10 years and banning the sale of on-site caravans until the Department of Sustainability and Environment released its report on best practice for management of Crown land and caravan parks.
