A Supreme Territory similar
to those stolen in Perth |
POLICE have issued an urgent plea to people to upgrade their caravan
security as thieves continue to reap rich pickings from recreational
vehicles.
This follows a dramatic increase in the number of expensive caravans being
stolen recently. It is thought crooks are targeting high quality caravans,
with some being destined for rebirthing or stolen to order.
In the latest incidents, two caravans were stolen from Perth suburbs in
Western Australia.
Police are seeking witnesses to the theft of an $85,000 caravan in South
Guildford in the early hours of February 23.
The 2008 model Supreme Territory caravan, registered number 1TKH477, was
locked and parked on the verge of the Houghton Close home.
Its owner was woken at about 4am by the sound of a vehicle driving slowly
past his house. When he went outside to investigate he discovered his
caravan had been stolen.
The brazen thieves had cut through a padlock which had been used to secure
the towing hitch.
Sergeant Garry Tuffin, of the East Metropolitan Crime Prevention Unit,
said: "This incident raised concern as it was the second caravan theft
from the district in 10 days. A Supreme Territory caravan was also stolen
from Maida Vale under similar circumstances.
"I strongly urge all caravan owners to consider upgrading their caravan
security as a matter of urgency."
Forrestfield Police hope the public has information to help them to locate
the other Supreme Territory caravan, which was stolen on the night of
February 12.
The 9m caravan, bearing Victorian registration plate R20008, also
contained the owner's passport and several other important items.
Police Constable Kellynda Owen said: "The 'van was parked in the yard of
the Advent Park camping and convention centre in Kalamunda Road and had
been secured.
"The thieves also took its 'A-frame' annexe, so there would have been
considerable planning on their part to move it from the site."
She was confident someone would have seen the caravan being towed away or
suspicious activity at the scene.
"If that is the case, I urge them to phone Crime Stoppers immediately on
1800 333 000 or Forrestfield Police Station on (08) 9359 1033. Information
can be provided anonymously."
