Woolies reject forum claims on overnight stays

Fresh food people pour cold water on free camping rumour

THE giant Woolworths organisation has denied reports it will allow caravanners and other travellers to free-camp in its carparks.

According to an online caravanners' forum, the Woolies supermarket at Ayr in north Queensland is about to trial free overnight parking for recreational vehicles, and if successful it could spread to others in the 700-store chain.

But Woolworths Limited spokesperson Jill Notzon was quick to pour cold water on the rumour.

She told Caravanning News: "Woolworths is currently unaware of any arrangements for caravans or motorhomes to stay overnight in the carpark at Ayr."

Overnighting in supermarket carparks is popular in America, but it could soon also be a thing of the past after new moves to ban recreational vehicles from free-camping in commercial carparks.

Proposed new laws will prohibit caravanners and motorhomers from staying overnight in all public carparks in the state of Maine.

Travellers caught in "commercial" carparks, including those at Wal-Mart – popular overnight stops for many recreational vehicles – will face fines of up to $100.
