'Turnout great news for local tourism'

Caravanning Queensland's pre-Xmas show hailed a resounding success

Jason Plant Have your say

Caravanning Queensland's four-day pre-Christmas sale at Brisbane's showgrounds from Oct 29 has been hailed a huge success, with 22,529 'carafans' pouring through the gates.

Chief executive Jason Plant (pictured) said that despite the wild weather, about 7500 more people attended the event compared to the previous year ... the majority being first-timers.

He said the tremendous turnout was great news for local tourism, especially the small regional towns that have seen the worst of 2020 with bushfires, drought and COVID and with Queenslanders staying home this Christmas.

The Let’s Go Brisbane Caravan and Outdoor Sale marked the hugely successful return of Caravanning Queensland’s annual pre-Christmas event, with visitors browsing trailers, campers, and caravans of every shape and size from over 120 exhibitors.

The most popular attraction was the towing and weights masterclasses along with the caravan reversing challenge, with daily sessions booked out in advance.

"Our economy has taken a hit this year,” Mr Plant said.

"But the success of the show is a testament to Queenslanders' plans to take up outdoor adventuring this Christmas.

"We live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia, and there's never been a better time to explore our great backyard."

Mr Plant also praised the hard work of exhibitors and the industry to ensure the show complied with Queensland Health's COVID-safe protocols, proving that Caravanning Queensland’s highly anticipated events could continue to thrive under this new normal.

"The caravan and camping industry is mostly made up of families who took a whopping 6.4 million trips in 2019, up 10 percent from the year before," he said.

"With the tremendous turnout at the show, it looks like the number of unforgettable family memories created will be higher than ever in 2021."

Caravanning Queensland is already gearing up to deliver another successful event at the Let's Go Gold Coast Caravan & Outdoor Show at Metricon Stadium in March next year.
