Rig checks vital before
hitting
road, warn Queensland police
Have your say
POLICE in Queensland have requested
caravanners to familiarise themselves with their rig before hitting the
road.
"Caravanning can be an exciting time for everyone, but it can also lead to
tragedy if you don't know your vehicles capability," Darling Downs officer
Senior Constable Belinda Elks said.
"Drivers of vehicles towing caravans or trailers are responsible for
driving to the conditions and understanding the impacts of the extra
load."
She said factors adding to the challenges of towing a caravan or trailer
were:
* Road trains
* Variable road conditions
* Long distances between towns
* Patchy communications
* Wildlife on the roads.
"Every time you stop, you should check the vehicle and take the
opportunity to visually inspect towing connections, tyres and lights and
address any issues before they become a problem," Sen Const Elks said.
As part of Operation Springbreak, police would be conducting high
visibility patrols across Queensland which would focus on fatigue, speed
and drink or drug drivers.
Meanwhile, Caravanning Queensland, in cooperation with the Queensland
Government, is offering RV owners the opportunity to have their caravan
and car combination weighed, free of charge, at the Toowoomba Showgrounds
in October.

Police say that road safety is everyone's responsibility ... "but it
starts with you".
