CRAIG'S LABOUR OF LOVE
FELLOW caravanners beat a well-trodden path to knock on the door of Craig Young's caravan when he hits the road. But the operations director for a Sydney financial company is used to fielding questions from intrigued travellers about his unique 22ft holiday home ... which he built himself from scratch. "There was nothing on the market I liked for the dollars and weight so I set about designing my own," the single dad of two young children told Caravanning News. "Then I researched the materials and built it. I like to get away and wanted to be able to take the toys with me!" Craig, from Penrith in NSW, said he used plastic to construct the twin-axle caravan, which weighs in at around 1300kg unloaded. "It is honeycomb core polypropylene ... very light and strong," he explained. "I think I am the first to use this material for a caravan in Australia, but there is a fifth-wheeler and motorhome in the same stuff. It is a very popular material in transport in Europe." The rear-entrance caravan, which has hinged versions of slide-outs on each side to offer extra interior space, comes with all mod cons including split system air-conditioning, wall-to-ceiling pullout pantry and exterior slide-out four-burner barbecue. The caravan's rear door is inset into a larger door which opens 90 degrees to simplify getting his children's toys, including their favourite bicycles, in and out. Craig estimates it took 300 hours to build his dream, nearly a third of the time swallowed up on the fold-out beds. And the cost? Less than $35,000.
