OCTOBER was a horror month for caravan accidents ... claiming the life of two grey nomads and put many other travellers in hospital.

A woman was airlifted to hospital after two-vehicle smash on the Bruce Highway in Queensland.

The 38-year-old caravanner suffered suspected spinal injuries when the 4WD in which she was a passenger rolled in the lunchtime head-on accident near St Lawrence.

Rescue crews used hydraulic equipment to cut the injured woman and three other people from the wreckage.

She was flown by the Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service to Rockhampton Base Hospital.

Her 43-year-old husband, who was driving the 4WD which was towing their caravan, was taken by ambulance to the same hospital with a suspected shoulder injury.

Their two children escaped with minor cuts.

Police said the highway was closed for several hours while breakdown crews cleared the crash scene.

A 60-YEAR-OLD caravanner died when her 4WD and caravan overturned on the Hume Highway near Tarcutta in New South Wales.

Witnesses said the Nissan Patrol rolled several times before coming to rest on the northbound lanes of the highway.

Miraculously, the woman's male passenger escape unhurt.

Investigators have appealed for anyone travelling near the caravan before the crash to contact them.

The accident happened about 20km north of Tarcutta near the Sturt Highway turn-off.

A report was being prepared for the coroner.

A BRISBANE family of three suffered minor injuries when a 4WD towing a caravan crashed on Bruce Highway near Nambour in Queensland.

Onlookers said the rig careered through the median strip before becoming "airborne" and colliding with the utility travelling the opposite direction.

The father, mother and their five-year-old daughter, who were returning from a school holiday camping trip to Elanda Point north of Noosa, were pulled from their vehicle which ended up on its side.

The injured were taken to Nambour Hospital.

The crash happened around 1.20pm on the northbound lanes of the highway south of the Bli Bli Road exit near Nambour.

Both lanes of the highway were closed while the wreckage was cleared.

Police believe high winds could have been a factor in the accident.

A VICTORIAN caravanner had a lucky escape when his 4WD and caravan did a 180-degree spin and overturned on the Carnarvon Highway in Queensland.

The 62-year-old traveller lost control of his Nissan Navara, which was towing a 21ft caravan, as he was being overtaken by a truck about 20km south of Rolleston.

Police believe wind shear combined with the drafting effect of the truck was responsible.
